![]() Halloween is thought to have influences from Christian beliefs and practices. ![]() History Christian origins and historic customs The word halloween comes from the Scottish form of All Hallows' Eve (the evening before All Hallows' Day): even is the Scots term for "eve" or "evening", and is contracted to e'en or een (All) Hallow(s) E(v)en became Hallowe'en. The word Halloween or Hallowe'en (" Saints' evening" ) is of Christian origin a term equivalent to "All Hallows Eve" is attested in Old English. Etymology " Halloween" (1785) by Scottish poet Robert Burns, recounts various legends of the holiday. ![]() Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes. Some people practice the Christian observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, although it is a secular celebration for others. Popular Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guising and souling), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins or turnips into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, and watching horror or Halloween-themed films. Celebrated in Ireland and Scotland for centuries, Irish and Scottish immigrants took many Halloween customs to North America in the 19th century, and then through American influence various Halloween customs spread to other countries by the late 20th and early 21st century. Other academics believe Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, being the vigil of All Hallow's Day. Some go further and suggest that Samhain may have been Christianized as All Hallow's Day, along with its eve, by the early Church. One theory holds that many Halloween traditions were influenced by Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain, which are believed to have pagan roots. It begins the observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints ( hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed. Halloween or Hallowe'en (less commonly known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve) is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Saints' Day. The tracks shown in Figure 2 are schematic, as the actual paths can be highly variable. ![]() In Figure 2, we see three of the most important tracks: the Alberta Clipper, the Colorado Low, and the Hatteras Low (which may be called a Gulf Low at its start and a Nor’easter in New England). The low-pressure centres and their extended troughs roughly mark April’s major storm tracks across the continent. ![]() The eclipse track is the pale red ribbon from lower left to upper right. Figure 2: A map of average April sea-level pressure (2000-2019) and the tracks of the most common types of spring storms. Over the continent, a poorly organized surface low lies along the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains with a low-pressure trough extending across the Great Lakes and Newfoundland to join up with a deep low near Iceland. In April, these anticyclones are beginning to strengthen from their winter minimums, though they have only a limited effect on eclipse-day weather. Two high-pressure systems straddle the North American continent, one northeast of Hawaii in the Pacific, the other between Bermuda and the Azores in the Atlantic. T he chart of average April sea-level pressure shown in Figure 2 sets the stage for this discussion of eclipse weather. Somewhat surprisingly, it is the presence of water-the Great Lakes and the Gulf of St Lawrence-that has the biggest impact on cloudiness. Unfortunately, the spring season and the location of the storm tracks through this area superimposes the benefits given by the terrain onto a very cloudy climatology, giving limited relief to eclipse travellers. Only after reaching the Middle Atlantic States south of Lake Erie does the southern side of the Moon’s path cross the rugged topography of the northern Appalachian Mountains where some advantage might be gained by hiding behind a topographic barrier. In this eclipse, mountain terrain is only important in Mexico, where much of the track is sandwiched between the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains along the Pacific Coast and the Sierra Madre Oriental along the Gulf of Mexico (Figure 1).įrom Texas to the Great Lakes, the track moves across the low topography of the Great Plains and the Mississippi Valley where terrain and cloud-cover variations are muted. Locations in the lee of high terrain tend to be sunnier-sometimes considerably sunnier-than those on the windward side. In the 2017 eclipse, the rugged terrain of the western mountains had a large influence on the formation of clouds. In general, there is a steady increase in cloud cover from south to north. ![]() In this eclipse, the main controls on the weather, and particularly the cloud cover, lies with the season and the latitude, with smaller effects due to topography and the nature of the landscape, particularly the presence of nearby water bodies. Finding that magical viewing spot will be much more demanding than seven years earlier.įigure 1: Topographic map showing the track of the eclipse across North America. In Maritime Canada, the last of the winter snow has yet to melt and fresh snowfalls are a threat with every weather system. Over the United States, southern parts of the track are already well into the thunderstorm season, while to the north, spring storms and occasional snowfalls still hint of the departing winter. In Mexico, the winter dry season is in its last month before the summer rains begin. April is a month of transition across the continent, with winter storms gradually giving way to the convective buildups of spring and summer. North America’s second total eclipse of the past seven years comes at a very different season than that in 2017. ![]() Animation of the passage of the lunar shadow created in WinEclipse, a program developed by the late Heinz Scsibrany. ![]() It’s probably the best sale on tools you’ll see before Black Friday, so take advantage of the savings while you can. A Barcode Inventory System App for your Stockroom Without real-time inventory levels, it’s very difficult to manage the flow of parts in your business as the system would always be one step behind. When technicians need a part on site they could first check if it’s in stock and request it from the warehouse, instead of ordering another. This means everyone can know exactly what items are in stock and how many of each item is available. What are the Benefits of a Barcode Inventory System? Instant Inventory LevelsĪ properly implemented barcode inventory system should give your team access to instantaneous inventory levels. A barcode inventory system can help solve many of these challenges by giving you access to real-time inventory levels, barcode scanning, and a returns workflow. If that sounds like your business, keep reading to learn what can be done to remedy these problems. You have to cancel work orders due to low parts availability. You don’t use up existing parts before ordering more.It takes too long to check in new inventory. You don’t know what (or how much) is in stock. Here are some common issues that field service businesses face when managing inventory: To decide what sort of inventory management software your business needs, it’s important to first understand the problems that you have with your current solution. ![]() If the software includes a barcode inventory management app, this will offer the warehouse manager the right tools to quickly scan barcodes and check in parts. The best place to begin is with a barcode inventory system that will handle your entire process from the arrival of parts to returns from customers. When looking to develop a new and better inventory management workflow, it can be difficult to know where to start. Whether you’re a plumber, electrician, or HVAC technician, you’ll handle various parts every day that need to be properly ordered, checked in, stored, and managed. Inventory management that includes a barcode inventory system can be a challenge for any field service business to implement. ![]() Whether that's through increased level design, improved multiplayer functionality, or beyond, the possibility is exciting.īut while fans might call for a new Katamari Damacy game after a decade of waiting, there's no guarantee that the likes of Katamari Damacy Reroll and We Love Katamari Reroll will lead to anything other than more remasters. This may be promising, as Katamari Forever was released on PS3 and nothing substantially new has been added to the remasters, meaning that a different Katamari Damacy game could take advantage of the generational jump to significantly expand its design. As the recent spate of remasters is now introducing We Love Katamari REROLL and its new features, this could mean that the series is priming itself for a comeback. With no truly new console entries since then, other series have taken Katamari Damacy's mantle to fill the niche the franchise neglected.Īfter more than a decade without a brand-new Katamari Damacy for consoles, a new entry is long overdue. Consequently, the last "new" game Katamari Forever from 2009 slowed the series down, which was made worse since it mostly repackaged older levels into a new story. But this has meant that much of the series has been dedicated to handheld and mobile games, something which would have limited their quality and scale. If you’re looking for a fun puzzler, you should consider rolling this game into your collection.Since Katamari Damacy hasn't been tied down as a console exclusive, the series has spanned plenty of platforms starting from PS2 and branching out from there. Sure, Katamari Damacy Reroll’s not the most graphically intense title, even with remastered visuals, but its true appeal is in its addictive music and gameplay. But the control issues aside, the charm of the original game returns. In fact, playing with the Pro Controller is the best way to maneuver through the environment. The Switch controls here don’t really help the analog sticks are iffy and the motion controls, while unique to the system, aren’t any better. This can also be a bit challenging as well, because you’re sometimes fighting against the controls to smoothly control the massive ball. That adds a bit of pressure to each play area, as you try to instantly figure out what you can collect, what is too large for your Katamari, and what possible hazards may propel you in a different direction. It’s very quirky and strange, but that’s part of the game’s charm, which will keep you playing a stage over and over to make larger stars or improve on your collections.īut this isn’t a leisurely gathering of items – you’re given a short time limit to grow your Katamari before creating a replacement star or planet. By the end of the game, you’ll be rolling up buildings, boats, and even continents. Initially, you’ll pick up small objects like paper clips, thumbtacks and orange slices, bat as you gather more and more, the ball gets much larger, allowing you to pick up bigger items as well. But you’re not gathering comets or burned out stars instead, thanks to the Katamari ball that you’re always moving, you’re gathering an odd mix of items. Katamari Damacy Reroll is a remastered version of 2004’s classic puzzle game, Katamari Damacy, where players are tasked with remaking the stars and planets in the sky after they’ve been accidentally destroyed. This classic puzzle game returns to roll up fun on a new console, introducing more gamers to this world melding entertainment. Make a Do Not Sell request to Katamari Damacy Reroll. Under the CCPA law you have the right to protect your personal information. ![]() ![]() One character makes comments referring to alcoholism through the game, but nothing’s shown. Players will have to find the best way to help grow their Katamari (or sticky ball) in the shortest amount of time with the items around, which can potentially frustrate players until they figure out the best way to do this. ![]() Plus, the cartoonish visuals limit the impact of steamrolling over people. While you run over things you come across, and you may hear some screams as you move over people and living creatures, no blood or gore is shown. Players control a small figure trying to roll up objects, people, and animals to create stars and other celestial bodies by using a sticky ball. The game is a remastered version of the original Katamari Damacy game that was released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2. with the existing controllers you only see one Group at a time, and folded across a 4x4 grid. You might think this is functionality that is essentially available on the existing Maschine controllers, and in fact when you hold down the Scene or Pattern buttons on existing Machines, you get 16 pads to select from instead of eight. And that, in a nutshell, is the arrangement workflow in the Jam. Tapping a selected Pattern stops it and clears its assignment from the Scene. Tapping any other Pattern on the matrix will immediately start it playing and assign it to the Scene. The grid indicates which Patterns are assigned to the selected Scene. ![]() Pressing a Scene button selects it, and triggers it if you’re in Play. Finally, the top row of numbered buttons are Scenes. ![]() The eight buttons above each Group selector represent Patterns in the Groups. The bottom row of buttons - labelled A-H - are Group selectors with the same function as the Group buttons on other Maschine hardware. You can always return to this view using the Song button at the top of the surface. ![]() When you fire up a Maschine project the Jam comes to life in bold colours with the grid in its default mode, showing an overview of the building blocks of your session. You can connect multiple Jams, but only to control multiple instances of the Maschine plug-in in a DAW. Connection is via USB, and the Jam is fully bus powered, giving a Maschine or Mikro plus Jam combination the advantage over Push if you’re avoiding mains adaptors. It’s thinner, but comes with a bolt-on foot that raises the rear to match the wedge profile of the regular Maschine surface. The Jam has the same physical footprint as the ‘standard’ Maschine controller, but shares the flat-faced design of the Maschine Studio, without the raised ‘curbs’ that run across the top and bottom of the other versions. You also get a full transport section and an encoder that’s used for sound browsing and adjusting performance controls. Below the grid are eight touch strips that can act as Group faders, device and parameter controllers, and performance effects for real-time tweaking. You’ll also find drum-pad and keyboard modes for live playing and recording of kits and instruments, and you can use Maschine with just the Jam, although the lack of velocity sensitive pads is limiting. The grid also specialises in step sequencing, with both gate and piano-roll modes for visual pattern programming. As we’ll see, this is equivalent, but conceptually different to your typical Ableton clip-launch controller. Its large grid provides fast access to your Scenes, Patterns and Groups. NI describe the Jam as a “Production and Performance System”. Of course Maschine slots nicely into such a setup, but now NI’s Jam controller brings a unique take on these live performance controllers to the Maschine environment, and also offers a one-stop option for controlling both Maschine and Live. But for improvised arrangements and live performances the combo of Live with a grid controller like the Push, APC or Launchpad is compelling. NI’s Maschine has become a dominant force in electronic music, usurping the MPC as the standard beat workstation, and even nipping at Ableton’s heels as a stand-alone production platform. ![]() Can NI’s new performance controller preserve Maschine’s status as king of the beat stations? The most exciting benefit to the museum of all is that after serving the community and the world for 83 years, once the building is completed and the layout is live, the museum will be open year-round for all to enjoy for the first time in history! Museum volunteers and a future Model Railroad Club for all ages housed at the museum will help refresh the layout and build the landscape and new buildings on the new sections, adding in trolley lines to even better connect the layout to the museum’s overall mission. After the building is complete, this company will return to set up the layout in its new home and add the new sections needed. In April 2022, the layout was disassembled in Jonesport and relocated to climate controlled storage units in Kennebunk by Stephan Lamb Associates, a professional model railroad layout moving company. Construction of the building will begin in April and site and foundation work will proceed until the weather gets too cold to continue in January. The Wyss Foundation approved the project and their donation is the largest gift in Seashore Trolley Museum’s 83-year history. Fremin also helped the museum determine how best to adapt the model to meet Kennebunkport building codes and ADA compliance, in particular widening all the aisles to modern standards. The museum researched the layout for months to determine how the layout could be kept as intact as possible and relocated to Kennebunkport, and what type of facility would be needed to house such an artifact.Ī custom-building design was developed by Museum volunteer and architect Herb Fremin. Like the other groups approached, the museum did not have the space to display such a large model. Hansjoerg Wyss, a friend of the Beals and a rail enthusiast and philanthropist, approached Seashore Trolley Museum in 2020 to ask if they might consider providing a home for the layout. Because of the layout’s impressive size, no one could accept the donation without taking the model apart and making the layout much smaller. Upon Buz’s passing in 2013, Helen continued to curate the layout while looking for another model club or nonprofit to resume ownership. Best-selling author Stephen King even provided the designs of his Victorian home in Bangor to the Beals, and they replicated it expertly. From Quoddy Lighthouse to the mountains of Maine, to the paper mills and Dragon Cement, street blocks representing the communities the Maine Central Model Railroad operated through and several roundhouses, tunnels, rivers and the ocean, the layout has it all. ![]() For decades, the couple opened their home to guests from all over the world to view one of Maine’s largest layouts in HO-scale.
